I woke from my daze when I heard the voice. It spoke my English name with the heavy accent of an immigrated Chinese woman. She couldn't even pronounce it right. I had been named by the doctor who attended my mother in labor. My family had been poor at the time, and unable to pay the doctor. They came to the agreement that he would name me, and I'd be brought up as a proper English lady. From the time I was old enough to stand, I was squished into a corset and taught to knit and crochet. Monaima-Prologue+Epilogue I opened my eyes slowly... all was dark around me except for a pin prick of faint green light. It seemed as if I were in a pitch dark room, with a tiny spot of light just feet away from me. I noted that it was very cold. Wondering what happened to the heat of the flames, I reached up towards the light, hoping to find warmth in its origin. To my surprise, it was too far away.
